Yesterday morning Jeremy Scott tweeted that his collection was a “Love letter to the Middle East” whilst using several #ARABSPRING2013 hashtags. His show later at Milk Studios proved he wasn’t kidding. Models strutted down the catwalk in sequined leopard-print and sheer black burkas paired with leather caps and thigh-high boots whilst old school jams by Aaliyah and Missy Elliott blared. (Backstage, we overheard Scott saying he asked Missy for her approval only the night before, which was answered with a request for some of his designer duds). The overwhelmingly crowded check-in line was street-style photography gold, with Face Hunter’s Yvan Rodic, Jak & Jil’s Tommy Ton and Phil Oh’s Street Peeper snapping away at the cool kids clad in their zaniest best. As imagined, the front-row was a spectacle of downtown darlings, club kids you’d likely find every Tuesday at rave-friendly party Westgay at Westway, and celebs like a smize-ing Tyra Banks and Paris Hilton. After the riot of a show, i-D went backstage to chit-chat with buzzed-about musicians Grimes, Sky Ferreira and Natalia Kills and living legends Ellen Von Unwerth and Arianne Phillips, many of whom were Instagramming away with the lauded wild child of a designer. We got their (spoiler alert: very enthusiastic) show reviews…
Grimes: Oh my God! I don’t even know what I thought. It was really cool. There were some strong political statements in there. I like people who do stuff in fashion that makes a statement because it’s sometimes seen as a vapid thing. Jeremy really plays with things. The burka hats! Taking something that’s so traditionally anti-fashion and incorporating it into something so utterly high-fashion. I loved it.
Arianne Phillips: That show was fantastic. I loved it. It’s really timely, it’s really chic. Jeremy was on his A-Game for sure. Really perfect – everything about it! I’m so inarticulate today… Five words to sum it up: relevant, sexy, timely, fun, and cheeky.
Sky Ferreira: It was really cool. I want the blue snakeskin outfit, even though it’s for guys. I want it fitted on me instead.
Natalia Kills: I love Jeremy. I’m really excited about this new collection because it’s all black and gold, and everyone knows that’s my style. And I’m probably gonna wear every single thing from the collection. Next time I do a show in Dubai, I’ll definitely be wearing one of his burkas.
Ellen Von Unwerth: It’s a must! I never want to miss it. This collection was just genius. I really loved everything. It was Eastern world, American and hip-hop… a mixture of that. It’s a very new style and I’m sure he’ll get lots of new clients.
