Kel Markey’s got it. A superstar name, a straight cut mane and piercing green eyes, looking straight on into her bright future as she walks down every catwalk in New York. On the cover of i-D’s The Just Kids Issue, photographed by Solve Sundsbo and Fashion Director Charlotte Stockdale, Kel is about to blow. A hurried email this morning from i-D Editor Holly Shackleton, currently in New York, read: “Blimey O’Reilly Charlotte and Solve’s Just Kids cover girl Kel Markey has broken through. She’s walked everything! Standout new girl of the season so far.” With something of the Kristen Stewart/ Bella Swan (pale, post-vampire) about her, and something else of the Liz Hurley bob, Versace era, Kel’s looks arouse a heady mix of current fix and nostalgia. Kel short for Kelsey, the 21-year-old from Gainesville, Florida, didn’t get scouted in an airport/ swimming bath/ subway, she decided she could be a model and went for it. You can sort of tell it from her face, there’s fierce determination there and blue steel’s got nothing to do with it. A whopping ten shows under her belt already, there’s plenty more catwalk Kel to come in the next few days. Keep your eye on this one, she’s a catch.
