There was a poignant moment during the Erdem show at which the power accidentally cut out, leaving the models to walk around the ring-shaped catwalk in utter silence. It was chilling, not least because the soundtrack had already set the mood for an unsettling atmosphere. “Caaaandy,” a vocal repeated over and over again while Erdem’s devastatingly beautiful powder pink floral dresses moved around in circles, the faint clacking of their Nicholas Kirkwood platform heels resounding in the tent on Manchester Square. Erdem’s SS13 collection was a study in how the aliens dreamt up by the late science fiction writer Zenna Henderson would try to fit in on Planet Earth. The result was an eerie kind of icy perfection, which seemed almost clinical and robotic – and magnificently so. Keeping the Mid-Century silhouette that fits his pristine universe so immaculately, Erdem used lace and python in a patchwork effect before the candy colours promised in the scary soundtrack took over. It was quite something. Maybe that power cut wasn’t an accident after all.
