If she wasn’t so pretty Charlotte Free might have worn a lab coat and geeked out at the weekends competing in The Legend of Zelda Nintendo battles. Instead she rocks out with Terry Richardson’s gang, hangs around on magazine covers and amasses several thousands of worldwide Free wannabes simply by being. Scouted in LA in an arcade playing a video game, but not listening to Lana del Rey, or even thinking about her, the now 19-year-old, IMG-signed Charlotte is a big fashion deal. She stopped by i-D earlier this year all porcelain and dolly pretty but with bad girl eyeliner and give a sh*t pink hair, and on her way out, jumped down the two steps to street level with a “woo” that ensured we remembered her. A child of the MySpace generation, and disposition, music mad Charlotte now operates a successful tumblr where she posts pictures of green things from Frozen Planet and a 20,000 fan’d Facebook page, where she posts short videos of herself trying to pull her tongue out wearing alien contact lenses. There’s never a dull moment with Charlotte Free.
How were you scouted? I was at an arcade playing a game and this guy David Mushegain came up to me and asked to photograph me, for some reason I let him come to my house and the pictures we took were sent to my agency. Overall it was a pretty weird experience.
What made you decide to dye your hair? I had always wanted to dye my hair. The first colour I did my whole head was red, and once I went red I wanted to go pink.
If you changed your hair colour now what would you change it to? Maybe I would grow out my natural colour. I would like to have hair when I’m 30 (lol). Or maybe I would go red again. I liked that.
What’s your earliest memory? Going hiking with my mum and seeing a white owl, I wasn’t even two years old.
What TV shows did you watch as a kid? I liked Rugrats, Hey Arnold, pretty much all of the original nicktoons and shows on Nick. Powerpuff Girls and Courage the Cowardly Dog, Sailor Moon, Pokémon… The 90s had the best cartoons for kids. i would also rent the 80s cartoons all the time, Rainbow Brite, Care Bears, Popples.. the animation in the 80′s was so cool.
What was your favourite childhood game? The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, that game was like my life.
What posters did you have on your bedroom wall as a kid? I had a really cool Zelda poster, and I would make collages of that stuff, like elves and shit.
When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up? I knew I wanted to make electronic music when my dad took me to his friend’s house and showed me his synthesizer. I think I was four. I also thought about a job in the science field as it always interested me.
Do you still hang out with your childhood friends? Yeah, it’s kind of amazing how many people I still know and talk to, I have a great group of friends.
What has been your career highlight to date? Probably signing with Maybelline, i was trippin on that for a while.
You’ve shot with Terry Richardson before but what was it like shooting with him for i-D? It’s always a super friendly vibe at Terry’s studio. It was really cool this time because they ordered pizza for everyone. I got to have pizza and lemons, two of my favourite foods.
What do you like to do for fun? I like to lose myself in music, I love to dance. I’m trying to learn how to make music right now. I can’t wait till I get to the point where I can play live. Live music is fun.
