July Mixtape 2012

i-D adores girls, doesn’t everyone? Techno empress Nicole Moudaber is headlining July’s i-D MIX night, and a fit army of females rule this month’s mixtape. Separating the babes from the boys, Azealia Banks, M.I.A., Kelly Rowland, Rochelle Jordan, Angel Haze and Angelina Lucero bring the bass and brawn with their sweet sounding MP3s. Switch this on.

Listen to July’s mixtape live and loud tonight at XO, London. Admission’s free, all your need to know here.

So we lost Wimbledon, the rain continues to pour down hard and Bloc was a write off. The first few weeks of July have not given much cause for celebration, until now. Cue the July mixtape. Opening with a certified anthem courtesy of pocket-sized prodigal Leeds producer Happa, our Soundcloud stream moves from deep house to funky disco, then over to Tumblr-wave and retrolicious soul with ease. Hud Mo, Lunice, LOL Boys, Luca C, Brigante and Maribou State rule the early chapters of the playlist, maintaining a manic tempo before Plan B, Theophilus London, Waka Flocka Flame, Ndeluv, Curren$y and Kirko Bangz drop vocals over deep bass, keeping the flow moving fast and letting the genres evolve gradually. Then we slow down with Mind Enterprises, How To Dress Well, Soda Plain and Why?, who pose unanswerable questions with their elaborate noise constellations created via synths, strings, Traktor and spacey instrumentals. Enough with explaining what made the cut, experience the music for yourself, free and easily, to your right.

Grafting up a cartoon storm, Adam Graff is the brightly-coloured, good-natured guy who was kind enough to create the cover art for July’s Mixtape. Senior lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire heading the level 5 illustration pathway on the award-winning Graphic Design & Illustration BA (Hons) course, Adam’s idiosyncratic works are brimming with personality, communicating beautiful, innocent sentiments through child like drawings. Inspired by the importance of music, a cassette with super powers swoops down upon i-D online to bestow law and order to the airwaves that be. Adam, we salute you.
