Daniella + Sam

Raised between the Rockies and the Alberta prairie, Sam Ypma left behind the farm she spent her childhood on to rock the fashion boat with hair as white as her skin, a stud in her septum and that piercing grey-blue gaze.

With a pale sprinkling of fresh-faced freckles across her perfectly formed nose and a streak of gothic street style, Sam Ypma has an other-worldly beauty that’s making her model-of-the-moment. Signed to FM in London, she’s living the high life but appreciates the simple delights of friends, food and films. Here Sam rocks her corn-rows in a super raw shoot from London-based photographer and stylist, Daniella Maiorano.

How did you get scouted Sam? I was first scouted in a mall when I was 12. I was later in a model search when I was 14 which was when I signed with Mode.

What was it like growing up in Lacombe? Where did you hang out? What did you do? I think growing up in Lacombe was great. I actually lived on a farm until I was 15 so growing up I didn’t even make it into town very much except for going to school. I mostly just hung out with my little brothers on the farm, and I spent a lot of time with my horses. I loved going horseback riding with my best friend every weekend.

How do you spend your free time now? Now I just like to hang out, spend time with friends. I also love to cook and I enjoy a good movie every now and then.

What’s your beauty secret? Good sleep and drinking lots of water.

What’s on your summer soundtrack? Anything by Death Grips or Cold Specks.

What’s your first thought when you look in the mirror? Baby alien.

How would you define your personal style? I just like lots of shape, texture, layers and of course black and white.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Treat others the way you want to be treated.
