Ever the show-woman, last night in the Versace colosseum, Empress Donatella laid on a modern day, gladiatorial extravaganza packed with fashion, fetishism and a whole lot of flesh. With the opening of the show celebrating the launch of the new Versace swimwear and underwear lines, the doors at the top of the runway swung open to reveal a tribe of scantily-clad adonises who each took their turn to storm the runway to much whooping and hollering from the baying crowd. Once the hunks in trunks had their moment, Donatella presented the house’s SS13 collection. With the suiting set to bring in the big bucks on the shop-floor, Donatella pumped up the volume and injected a true sense of fun and frivolity into proceedings. As ever, the summer palette was packed with azure blues, truck-loads of gold and some hot hot hot pinks. Bypassing the trend for short shorts that’s dominated catwalks in London and Milan so far this season, Miss V skipped straight from tapered trousers to super skimpy speedos. Cut-off arms in tailoring broadened already broad shoulders and drew the eye to the boys’ bulging biceps (cue the fashion pack speed dialling their personal trainers). One thing’s clear, the Versace man doesn’t do the intellectual battlefield, he decides his fights with an arm wrestle and celebrates his victories by pushing a comb through his well-coiffed quiff. In front of an audience who included movie-stars Chace Crawford, Hayden Christensen and Hunger Games contender Alexander Ludwig, Donatella set new standards in the superhero stakes; forget about blokes in capes or the X Men, it’s all about Team V!
