In case of emergency, pull to release. ‘Safety First’ was the admirable mantra of Mr Matthew Miller, second-time NEWGEN man from the North. Climber clips hung off reflective jackets and the boy who drew the short straw carried a huge tent backpack. Messages and instructions were printed on suits and cut out of starchy white shirts, which Miller revealed backstage were “safety instructions laser cut into the materials… I think safety is quite a beautiful concept”. Safe as they were, Miller’s boys weren’t from around here. They looked like they were in a post-funk, post-punk band from Berlin and their band style was very skinny, very short shorts showing off their very white legs; slim suits with eye-bending prints, and wicked wayward hair. Working with Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs’ Orlando Higginbottom on the soundtrack, which included a track from 80s Berlin band Palais Schaumburg, who TEED excitedly told i-D were reforming this summer, Miller said: “I think he’s quite a cool kid. So we said, ‘can you do some music for us’ and he said ‘yeah, sound’”. SS13 was Matthew Miller’s season. A clear message on a sharp silhouette. Looking forward to the next.
