i-Do: Hair Extensions

Peroxide fanaticism and impatience with one’s hairdresser can lead to the most chaotic bout of hairstyles. Harriet Verney recently suffered a DIY bleach bust up, but lived to tell the tale to i-D online, while her mate Sami Knight fixed her up with fakes!

According to several hairdresser friends of mine, the number one, vital tip when peroxiding bleach blonde hair is: never dye the same area twice. My mistake. Another essential tip: do not deceive yourself in thinking you can outsmart the instruction manual. The consequence of my ignorance and irrationality was a small bowl cut circling the crown of my head, with comedy long curtain hair tassels lagging behind. The moral of the story being, for those who dance in the burning sensation of bleach, do not be tempted by the prospect of a DIY kit. Extradited back to the 80’s where mullets and merkins grew from garden hedges and a beaver’s hairstyle was of the moment, I asked my friend Sami for some extensions and a few future tips.

Sami Knight’s Step-by-Step guide in ‘How to seduce a mischievous Mullet’:

1. Prep the hair with thickening spray and part it in your usual parting. Blowdry out smooth and prep and dry the extensions in the same way.
2. Section out the hair at the back of the head from ear to ear over the crown, this back section will have the extensions applied first.
3. Take a clean horizontal section about 1 inch above the nape hair growth and use clips to section the remaining hair away, measure the extension and cut to size.
4. Put a thin even layer of glue along the rough side of the extension weft and attach to the head where the root meets the scalp.
5. Use a hairdryer on a cold setting to dry the glue, take care to make sure the edges are secure.
6. Continue up the back of the head at 1 inch intervals; as you near the top of the head, make sure the hair above the top section covers the weft adequately.
7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 on the side sections, making sure to stop about an inch from the face, also ensuring the hair at the top of the parting covers the weft underneath.
8. Go along the bottom edge of the hairline and trim the bottom one inch off the extensions to make the hairline fuller.
9. Smooth the hair all over with a blowdryer & brush or a flat iron to blend the hair.
10. To remove the extensions shampoo the hair and apply plenty of conditioner, allow it to sit for 5 minutes, the bonds should soften and the extension will slide out.
