When God delivered the commandments to Moses, we’re sure he didn’t have a sweaty basement in Dalston in mind, but by some means that’s what’s happened.
Organised by the ubiquitous DJ Mosca and Unknown Soulja, Commandments is a new monthly club night bringing emerging musical talent to that dark, after-hours habit Alibi. Last Saturday saw the second edition of the night and large queues braving the pouring rain on Kingsland Road to see Hertfordshire based Huxley hit the decks alongside Joe Grime and Commandments residents for another serving of underground club music.
Huxley, aka Michael Dodman, has gone from strength to strength over the past year. Known for his sassy deep house releases on labels like Cecille and Tsuba, and with a fondness for occasional dabbles in two step garage, Huxley is the boy on the rise for 2012. i-D online had a quick catch up at Commandments and picked up this 30-minute garage mix to help kick start your bank holiday weekend.
Describe your sound and what we can expect from a set? It’ll be a mixture of house and garage. I like to mix it up quite a lot in my sets and my productions. I think it fits the vibe of Commandments nicely!
You’re newly signed to Ralph Lawson’s 2020Vision label, how did that come about? Well, funnily enough, I actually originally got approached by one of the A&Rs from 2020 when Tim [Ethyl] and I first started out. But we never really got around to doing anything, so it kind of fell on the back burner. Then a few years later Ralph got in touch with me to do a solo record. I couldn’t really believe it when it was all signed, 2020 is one of my favourite labels ever.
What inspires and influences your music making? Well everything, I suppose. It can be other music, hearing a sample or just being in the right moment and place.
What are your main interests outside music? Watching awful films, chilling out, eating (not really cooking so much), and just socialising with mates. Anything any growing boy might be into!
What are your hopes and aspirations for 2012? Is there any particular venue or festival you would like to play? My aspirations are just to continue as I’m going. It seems to be going pretty well at the moment, so I guess it’s the right idea. I have set myself a few goals and stuff, but I’d rather keep them to myself, just in case they don’t happen and I end up with egg on my face.
The next Commandments night is taking place on 23rd June.
