Working behind-the-scenes as a songwriter, 24-year-old Mercury signed British rapper L Marshall wrote tracks for major label artists before making his debut appearance on Wretch 32’s smash hit single ‘Traktor’. Using music as a vessel to vent his deepest, darkest thoughts, L’s emotive, street-taught material is inspired by Drake and looks destined for chart-topping territories. i-D online headed i-N Session with the man who can here.
When did you begin writing songs? I was eleven. I wasn’t very good back then. I started off wanting to be like Tupac, then eventually I found my own style. Lyrically what is the focus of you material? It’s just about my life, my relationships with friends, women and family. I’ve always felt that people don’t buy into music; they buy into the artists behind it, so when I write I try to give people a chance to know me. Just gotta keep it real. What was the first record you brought? The 1st record I remember listening to was Michael Jackson’s Thriller on vinyl. Who would be the ultimate artist to support on tour? Jay-Z, ALL DAY! He’s my favourite artist, full stop, and quite frankly is the only one I could honestly say I ‘look up’ to. What artists do you tip for big things in 2012? Maxsta, Labrinth, Rita Ora, J. Cole and Delilah. What’s next for you? Mixtape. EP. Album. And copious amounts of fun!
