Avengers Assemble!

The ultimate superhero film is on its way to the silver screen. Steady yourself…

If you were to go back in time a decade or so and tell your average comic geek that, within their lifetime, there would be a major Hollywood blockbuster featuring one of the most iconic superhero teams of all time they’d probably laugh (nasally) in your face and tell you to go back to Bizarro World. If you were to then tell them that it would be a strong contender for the most entertaining film of the year they’d probably pass out.

Since the first Iron Man film came out in 2008 Marvel Studios have been slowly building towards the ultimate superhero team-up film. This summer kicks off with the fruits of their labour. Avengers Assemble sees Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johanssen) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) joining forces to save the world from Tom Hiddleston’s devious Loki.

At the helm, and with the unenviable task of carrying a basket full of delicate fanboy dreams, is Buffy creator and geekdom messiah Joss Whedon. Having recently resurrected the meta-slasher masterpiece that is The Cabin in The Woods, 2012 is proving to be a big year for Whedon, and The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble, to give it its more accurate, lamer UK title) looks set to blow up astronomically. The film hits the superhero movie nail squarely on its all-too-often hard to hit head. It’s loud, fun, epic and exciting. Everything the perfect superhero movie should be.

Avengers Assemble is released today in selected UK cinemas.
