Stone Island started in 1982 – its badge an explorer’s compass, its name inspired by Heart Of Darkness author Joseph Conrad – and this year it’s celebrating its 30th anniversary… in style!

The birthday party includes an exhibition in Florence’s stunning Stazione Leopalda, and a line of special edition clothing, including a reissue of the original 1982 jacket, and a futuristic new transforming jacket that can be worn in over 30 different ways. There’s also a shiny new shop on London’s Brewer St. i-D popped down to the opening yesterday, on a golden spring evening. The shop-fit is sleek and modern, with an air of the sci-fi laboratory that we always imagine Stone Island’s innovative fabrics, finishes and colouring dyes emerging from; there’s just one open-plan room at street level, and on the back wall a big moon shines down on a minimal installation of reflective coats on poles… “It’s like an art gallery, it’s beautiful,” said the label’s CEO Carlo Rivetti outside. And why, we asked, is there a moon on the wall? “Because we are on another planet [laughs]… our designers take us in another dimension!” After a fun chat, one of Carlo’s team took him away to meet Stone Island super-fan Noel Gallagher, who was desperate to meet the man behind his favourite brand. Soon the balmy evening turned to night, and the store’s gallery turned into a dancefloor, bobbing away to an eclectic set from DJ’s Gilles Peterson and Thristian bPm. As of today the store’s open to all, so why not pop down to 79 Brewer St and howl at the moon?
