A month-long trip to the magical mountain kingdom of Bhutan, and Nepal in the Himalayas inspired Hernandez and Lazaro to consider the concept of clothing as protection for AW12. The opening white looks with asymmetric fastenings at the shoulder echoed karate uniforms, masks worn by kendo swordsmen led to experiments with woven leather and metallic paillette to create an effect that resembled Edo armor. This season, the Proenza boys are also thinking oversized, from baggy leather trousers, and exaggerated biker jackets. So that’s two emerging trends in the bag for a label that is bang on the money right now! For evening, detailing became more elaborate, with peacocks embroidered onto satin “Drive” jackets; woven leather mini-skirts and detailed Japanese landscapes brocaded onto chic skirt suits. “It’s Asian,” said Hernandez, describing the collection’s look, “but in a New York way.”
