On Sunday morning, under the Victorian Gothic arches of the Royal Courts, Nicole Farhi presented a darkly glamorous show inspired by the decadence of the Viennese Secession; specifically the fleshly, golden paintings of Gustav Klimt. To a soundtrack of soaring classical music, the models stepped out in strict blacks and whites, and all sorts of fabrics: broken chintzed wool, compressed felt, needle-punched wool and thick sandwich felt… Eventually the darkness was broken by shades of English mustard on polo necks and skirts, and the collection suddenly illuminated through shimmering laminates and embellishments. The influence of Klimt’s luxuriously patterned canvases was apparent in embroidered coats, feathery copper shards, shaped sequins and sparkling beads that stole the show!
