Ever since she burst on to the scene in 2009, Mary Katrantzou has not only caught our eye but sent our imaginations spinning. As a former interior design student, Katrantzou offers a different take on dressing. Her obsession with the home has seen her champion domestic accessories in her ready-to-wear including lampshades, Faberge eggs and Ming vases. While her pattern cutting takes on almost couture like precision. For AW12 Mary elevated the mundane, in particular those everyday objects around the home that you take for granted and don’t always see. Who knew you could find so much beauty in a spoon, a plate, a watch, a coat hanger? Her more relaxed silhouette also offered more commercially viable pieces for the girl on the go. There were chiffon dresses with full skirts, slinky pyjama trousers and oversized knits alongside her more trademark architectural dresses. In short this was a stellar show, that cemented her place as one of London’s brightest young stars.
