Boooom! Marc Jacobs delivered a sensational show at the Armoury last night, reaffirming his reputation as the best showman in town. Merging fashion, art and theatre on a grand scale, to the tune of Lionel Bart’s ‘Who will buy?’ (from the musical Oliver!), Jacobs put on a wonderfully crazy and eccentric show of cartoony Victoriana. The rickety house set made of white construction paper was dreamed up by the artist and friend Rachel Feinstein. From here Jacobs’ theatrical doll-like street urchins emerged, wearing wonky outsized Stephen Jones fur hats, sparkly buckled pilgrim shoes, exaggerated bell-shaped skirts, mad holographic paisley swirls and tinsel, lots of tinsel. One part Dr Seuss, One part Plymouth Rock with a touch of Grimm’s Fairytale. It was bonkers and we loved it. This was not just clothes on a runway, this was the merging of art, theatre and fashion. Even the most cynical ‘seen it all before’ fashion editors left with huge smiles on their face, knowing they had just seen something very special. Marc Jacobs, we thank you!
