Fast-living Gwen Lu is as talented behind the lens as she is at striking a pose in-front of the flashlight. A professional model and photographer when she’s not being shot she likes to spend her spare-time shooting. First scouted in Singapore back in 2008, this motorbike-riding tomboy never believed herself beautiful enough be a model, but urged by friends and family to try her luck with agencies, she eventually got scouted by the Director of Elite Models and embarked on an incredible career which now takes her all over the world. Living between the USA, UK and Singapore (out of one heavy suitcase!) Gwen’s signature look is laid back grunge. A captivating natural beauty with piercing deep brown eyes and a Jessica Rabbit pout, she is a killer cover star with all kinds of attitude. i-D online jumped on the back of her bike and set sail for the high-fashion horizon.
Tell us about your love affair with photography? I love to be in front and behind the lens. I take mostly B&W photos of places and people. Right now I’m obsessed with my Nikon F3. I develop my own films when time allows and I also shoot and edit short videos with a digital Harinezumi. I blog my pictures here. What do you do to relax? There isn’t much time to relax! In London there are so many great museums, and many of them are free admission. I love to visit the street markets and explore the city. I also just bought a book to read while commuting on the tube and buses, Jonathan Coe’s ‘The House of Sleep’. I like to watch a good movie every week. I think I only relax when I sleep! How has modelling changed your life? I’m always so busy! The busy periods make me appreciate the time I have to spend with family, friends and loved ones. It also makes me be a better person: motivated, well-disciplined and organised. Modelling is like going to school, you learn something new every day. I have grown up a lot.
