i-N Conversation: Charli XCX

Who run the world? Er, GIRLS dummy! In The Whatever The Weather Issue, i-D’s Music Editor Hattie Collins rounds-up some of finest British femmes in the music industry right now. The alphabet-spanning Charli XCX is in amongst them, here’s a tidbit of what unfolds in the issue…

Charli Aitchison, 19, a singer, sometime rapper, art student, party promoter and magazine editor of Shut Your Pretty Mouth has already been tipped by MTV to do big things in 2012. From her genesis as a precocious fourteen year-old “chucking glitter over myself” and “ripping up teddy bears” at grimy Hackney raves, the Bishop’s Stortford born performer, who cites Kate Bush, Björk and Witch House (Salem) as influences, has matured musically in recent years. “I make dark pop,” she decides, before refuting any suggestion that signing to a major has gotten her all glossy. “I’m still very left. My style has stayed the same, it’s not like I’ve been turned into a fake tanned bimbo overnight!” Working on her debut album with Patrik Berger (Robyn) and Ariel Rechtshaid (Glasser), Charli, who names her dream collaborator as photographer David LaChapelle, is ready for the success that has been sniffing at her heels for the last five years. “I’ve been doing this for a while and I feel like I’ve worked really hard. I deserve to be doing stuff now because, for me, my music is real pop music with beautiful, visual, cinematic lyrics that will hopefully put interesting pictures into people’s heads.”
