Everyone’s in love with Tessa

i-D online premiere the latest music video from wistful indie band Still Corners, by i-D contributor and filmmaker Georgia Hudson.

Many people [mums] say to find love or success you must “put yourself out there.” And with an upcoming European tour, performances with Sharon Van Etten and a brand new, brilliant video, the London-based psychedelic pop group Still Corners are doing just that. i-D online asked the group’s producer/songwriter Greg Hughes about their future, feeling weird and why everybody loves Tessa, the group’s vocalist.

You’ve mentioned your love for Hitchcock and Lynch – how much have films inspired your music? I grew up watching Hitchcock and Lynch and being weirded out by their movies. So I’ve been trying to capture this feeling with the music ever since. There’s a movie every fan of Still Corners should watch called Night of the Hunter, one of the most darkly atmospheric movies ever made.

Have you ever been to Lynch’s club Silencio? We haven’t been to Silencio but we’ll be in Paris for our European tour so we’ll being paying a visit. When we were in Seattle we did make a stop at the Twin Peaks cafe and had black coffee and cherry pie. Agent Cooper would have approved!

People call your sound “psychedelic” – is that intentional? I think where Tessa and I write and record has something do with it. It’s underground, there are no windows and the temperature is at a constant 70 degrees. When you’re down there time stands still and it allows full concentration on whatever you’re doing plus you can be as loud as you like. I think we enter some sort of place because of it. I know when I come out of being there for a long session the streets feel like sensory overload, a car goes by, a bus, it’s like a bumpy return to the real world.

Your videos are so dreamy, tell me about ‘Endless Summer’. Georgia Hudson did a great job with ‘Endless Summer’. The English summer doesn’t last long and sometimes I feel if you blink you might miss it. So the video captures this feeling. It has the band in the cold but with these amazing scenes Georgia shot abroad with the ocean, a boat, people dancing, the heat. I literally want to grab that scene with the boat, I want to swim all around it but I can’t… not yet.

Are there any band romances? Is everyone in love with Tessa? I think everyone’s mostly in love with Tessa, what’s not to love?

What did you want to be as a kid? I went through three phases, first it was Superman, then a ninja, then I wanted to be Woody Allen.

Your European tour starts next month, what are you most excited about? We like being on the road where time and places all merge into this strange kaleidoscope of activity. Mostly we’re all really excited just to be out there doing what we love, seeing new things, meeting new people and fans and playing as best as possible. Hopefully we’ll transport some people to somewhere else a few times during the show.
