CFDA winner Joseph Altuzarra continues his stratospheric rise as one of NY’s hottest designers. This season saw the talented French designer take inspiration from Corto Maltese, a French comic from the 1970′s. Backstage he told i-D that “Maltese was a sailor, and his mum was a gypsy”. It was this combination of two worlds that brought about the military influenced and richly textured outerwear, from fur pea coats to shearling toggle coats, throw in some swashbuckling leather knee high boots and Altuzarra’s vision is almost complete. Almost, for that is only part of the story, Maltese was also a traveller and it was his adventures in Morocco and India that provided the premise for banjara dresses, embroidered gold medallions, pom-pom knitwear and colourful tapestry details. This collection was full of jet-setting glamour, with Altuzarra designing for a well-travelled woman whose passport is bursting with stamps from exotic far away lands. Altuzarra’s woman is strong, eccentric and a true modern-day gypsy.
