i-Do: Smokey Eyes

A new take on an old mould, i-D show you how to pull off smokey with a pale palette.

Smokey eyes means black right? Wrong! The panda eye is out, making way for the, somewhat oxymoronic ‘burnt-orange smokey-eye’. Because NEWSFLASH, drawing around your eyes in black isn’t necessarily the best option and no matter how well you apply, a few hours later you will inevitably look like an extra in Chim Chim Cher-ee. Applying the smokey template with a paler shade accentuates the natural colour of the eye and compliments rather than contrasts the skin tone. Here, makeup artist Lucy Bridge has used an earthy palette with nude lips and caramel orange, giving a fresh take on an old classic.
