At 6ft 5in, broad as a barn and strong as an ox, Roger Gracie is a pretty imposing chap. Here the Jiu-Jitsu champ shares the graceful side to his martial artistry with i-D online.
Taking up Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 10, Roger is now a competitive fighter and the proud founder of his own London-based martial arts academy. The sport runs thick through his veins; his Great Grandfather, a Brazilian diplomat, allowed Japanese settlers to remain in Brazil in exchange for them teaching his son the ancient art.
Add to his lofty height and bullish build, Roger’s ten championship titles in IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu and his MMA credentials, and you have a pretty mean man to find yourself toe-to-toe with in the ring. However, here Roger explains to i-D online that Jiu-Jitsu is perhaps better understood when translated into English, ‘gentle art’. Throughout the film, Roger doesn’t have the presence of a typical fighter, he’s not ‘out for a brawl’, instead he’s calm and collected, with a peaceful demeanour. Even with this mentality he’s has become one of the most feared opponents in the world of fighting. Breathe, watch, listen and learn.
