i-DJ: Eyes Down

Tall, talented, ambitious and on it, event organiser and DJ Hugo ‘Bukowski’ Allon is the ahead-of-the-game boy behind underground house music club night ‘Eyes down’, a party all about future sex/love sounds.

Bad ass and bass fuelled, Eyes Down sound-checks the future by playing the newest of tunes. Spearheaded by the Swedish born, London living Bukowski, this is a night for no frills music lovers. Taking residence at different locations around the capital, Hugo spends all of his time scouting out new talent to showcase at his self-started parties. Obsessed and innovative, the 6’4″ student of music at SAE works hard and plays harder. i-D online got us an exclusive mix courtesy of Hugo for this week’s i-DJ. Grab a sound-system, add some speakers and get involved.

What single track has had the greatest influence on you? Whitney Houston – It’s Not Right But It’s Okay. How embarrassing.

What makes a piece of music good, in your opinion? I don’t think there is a specific element as such. If I hear a good track I’ll want to listen again and again, maybe that’s the key.

Where is your favourite venue to play and place to party? The Nest and Rhythm Factory are pretty cool. Anywhere dark with a nice sound system and proper monitoring.

Tell me about the first Eyes Down event and what went down? The first Eyes Down was almost perfect, it was around this time last year and we’d booked Dark0 and Jam City. It got really busy and the venue had to shut down half way through Jam City’s set because it was understaffed or something! (the owner was crazy).

What have you learned from throwing events over the past three years? You have to spend money to make money.

Who has been the best act you’ve booked to date? We had LV for their album launch earlier this year, they smashed it.

Who would be your ultimate artist to book? There are so many people I’d love to put on. But ultimately would have to be someone like Mala.

What have been some of the standout tracks of this year, for you? There having been so many! Azealia Banks -212, Jai Paul – BTSTU and Drake – Marvin’s Room, off the top of my head!

What music blogs and websites do you regularly subscribe to? I follow Pitchfork, Xlr8r and Fact on twitter, they’re all great.

What new talent are you excited about right now? A good friend and very talented producer called Dark0, look him up.

How do you piece together your mixes? I usually have a playlist on iTunes which I’ll casually update with tunes I’d like to feature. When there’s enough to work with I see which mix well and play around on my CDJs.

What’s you chosen hangover cure? Sopranos marathon.

Name your top 5 nights out to get on it, in LDN? Eyes Down, Drm Rll Pls, Your Mums House, Gin & Juice and Boiler Room!
