As part of i-D NOW – far-reaching pop-up, which featured an array of events revolving around fashion and culture – Matthew Beard starred in a multimedia project, demonstrating his remarkable versatility as an actor.
The 22-year-old thespian from Sheffield portrayed six characters from British society for a fashion story shot i-D’s Winter Warm Up issue. Earning international acclaim for his breakthrough in 2009’s An Education, Matthew landed a starring role in the spring/summer 2011 Burberry Prorsum campaign, and a cameo in their runway show for autumn/winter 2011. He currently features in One Day with Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway.
Throughout the i-D NOW shoot, Matthew’s interpretations of The Street Kid, The Prep, The Androgyne, The Geek, The Gentleman, and The Hipster were captured on film in an effort to give readers a glimpse into his extraordinary transformations, and his command of the different characters. Keeping in line with the multimedia concept and honouring Matthew’s craft, i-D conducted an interview with him in the form of a screen test – a practice used in showbiz to see if an actor is right for a certain part.
