Whilst Florence Welch sang ‘What the Sea Gives’, Karl Lagerfeld took us on an aquatic adventure into an oceanic wonderland of gleaming white coral, monster-sized stingray and gigantic seahorses. The Grand Palais was magically transformed into a sandy sea bed where Lagerfeld’s ethereal deep-sea sirens wandered with pearls scattered in their hair and the sea-urchin shells propping up the heels of their sandals. This season saw Lagerfeld work with innovative techno fabrics to create an astonishingly “light” collection and show off his technical mastery with sensational evening dresses, eleborately pleated and elegantly draped. Airy organzas and iridescent synthetics in a palette of ocean blue, shell pink and mother-of-pearl created a supernatural effect. Shift dresses with trailing ribbons evoked seaweed swaying on the tide whilst sequins and silvery embroideries brought to mind stars reflected on a moonlit sea.
