Proenza Schouler. New York, 14/09/11

The faded orange 70′s shag pile carpet and retro light fittings provided the backdrop for Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez’s edgy take on mid-century American kitsch. Hawaaiian prints, 50′s shapes, platform formica shoes, and woven raffia backless dresses all made an appearance in this nostalgic collection. Jackets were engineered like ‘pin-up’ swimsuits, high-waisted shorts were of the ultra-flattering variety, and there were some very glamorous ‘cat-eye’ sunglasses. If all this sounds a little too retro, the Proenza boys made sure they were never too literal and ensured the cut and fit was always pointedly modern, a talent that seems to come naturally to these two gifted designers.
