Hot-footing it Back To The Future

i-D took some very exciting steps into the closet of one of Hollywood’s hottest heeled characters… The magnificent Marty McFly.

Taken on a magical mystery tour around Nike’s ‘West Coast HQ’ (for the day – AKA Universal Studios!) i-D was treated to an extra-exclusive first glimpse at the mega-brand’s superb reimagining of Marty’s Nike Mag kicks. As with many of the film’s fantastic and futuristic aspects, the Mags never actually existed. Whilst high-tops ruled the sidewalks, magically lighting heels was the stuff dreams were made of. But here in 2011, things are different, power lace they may not but let’s face it, ‘grown-ups’ have spent far too long green with envy in the children’s shoe dept at Clarks as our pint-sized juniors stomp with delight, their soles aflame with an LED glow. Well now we can stand in the spotlight too, a long time in the woodwork Nike has created 1500 pairs of Mags, all of which are set to be auctioned on eBay. With the man behind Marty’s magic, Michael J. Fox, a long time Parkinson’s sufferer, all proceeds from the sale will be going to The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Since the beginning of his tenure as CEO in 2006, Mark Parker has led Nike into innumerable social responsibility initiatives the Nike Mag project is already on the road to making significant contributions to the Parkinson’s cause (Tinie Tempah kicked off the bidding on Friday buying the first pair for $34k!). Explain we have tried but let’s face it there’s not many people who do it better than Nike so we’ll hush up and let them do the rest… With a little help from the Doc of course! Just hit play.

Head here for more from Michael J. Fox on the Mags. Auctions for a pair of Mags will also be taking place in Nike stores throughout the world including in London’s Nike Town on 18th September 2011 at. All proceeds will benefit the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research.
