Magic Martens: Do you remember the first time?
Remember the first time you realised you had fallen head-first hopelessly in love, the first time your heart felt like it had broken into a million tiny pieces, the first time you donned your docs to a festival and danced until the sun came up, thinking you might never come back down? First times define who we are and who we will become, they shape our future. Some 66 years ago, Mr Klaus ‘Doc’ Martens – working as a German army doctor during WWII – created what would become the quintessential British boot. Original, iconic, understated and instantly identifiable, its look is as true today as it was back then: air-soled, polished and yellow-threaded boots built to go the distance and take the strain. Scuzz ‘em up moshing, stud the outsides or take them to the beach, DMs are all about uncensored, unadulterated fun. i-D travelled to the British seaside town of Margate with models Agyness Deyn, Ash Stymest and iconic photographer Gavin Watson to watch them shoot the Dr. Martens’ First and Forever campaign. In this exclusive behind the scenes story, Gavin captures Aggy and Ash in Dr. Martens’ latest utilitarian collection of brogue-inspired treads, while we reminisce about their most memorable first times…
