Romantic, honest, vivacious and très chic, Laura Selfridge is the model discovered by Ryan McGinley, who used to believe she was a boy.
Currently in her third year at Columbia University, this 21-year-old high fashion enthusiast can most frequently be found worshipping at the scared alters of Prada, YSL and Maison Martin Margiela. Discovering her favourite labels through the work of photographers and stylists, she cites Irving Penn, Alfred Stieglitz, Mario Sorrenti, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Grace Coddington and Emmanuelle Alt as her heroes. Self-critical when perusing the editorials of glossies she has featured in, Laura feels most comfortable and confident in the company of loved ones. Inspired by Madonna’s material style and brazen attitude she is besotted by her bitch Beatrice and thinks her eyes and her butt are her best assets. i-D Online caught up with the long haired lovely to find out what makes her tick.
Do you think you are beautiful? It depends on if I am having a good or bad day.
Describe your self in five words: Smart, quirky, sprightly, spontaneous and hard working.
Who is your style icon? Daphne Guinness
How important is fashion to you? Pretty important. Clothes are an accent of character and they can be entertaining. They also show a knack for adapting to different environments, like a chameleon.
When was the last time you cried and why? A couple of days ago. It is quite embarrassing to be honest. I had worked in Philadelphia all day and I took the train back to New York to get my flight to London. I didn’t realise my roundtrip was from different airports in New York each way and I went to the wrong airport. Luckily it all worked out.
Where would your dream date take you on a perfect day/night out? For a bike ride.
Who would be your dream date? Marcel Duchamp. Maybe it will happen in an alternate reality.
What place in the world is the most special to you and why? New York City because it is always changing and always exciting. You see something new everyday.
Tell me something about you no one else knows? I thought I was a boy until I was five.
