i-N Conversation: Meadham Kirchhoff

Opposites attract is the mantra for design duo Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff.

Ed, the Englishman with pretty style and Ben, the Frenchman who claims he dresses like a grandad, met whilst studying at Central Saint Martins. The pair make up the London based brand Meadham Kirchhoff, feted for their brave and brilliant designs.

The dynamic duo, who have won themselves funding from Topshop’s NewGen scheme for numerous seasons, now design their own line for the highstreet giant and have recently opened a secret shop in store. Looking back over the past seven seasons it’s clear to see how much they’ve grown into the brand and how much the brand has grown into itself. When Meadham Kirchhoff first began they were known for their muted palette using creams, blacks and whites; now they are known for their unabashed use of colour. The show which attracted most attention was their most recent, which was over in a mere two minutes and saw them send an army of models down the runway, apparently ‘an accident’ because ‘there was no real beginning or end to the collection’.

i-D online stole half an hour with the busy pair to speak about their love for Courtney Love, their contempt for the term ‘muse’ and why London is their show home.
