Walter Van Beirendonck. Paris, 24/06/11

Plaids and jacquard were the stand-out themes for SS12 at Walter Van Bierendonck, who will be the subject of a ‘large-scale retrospective’ at the Antwerp fashion museum in Autumn of this year. ‘Dream The World Awake’ was the title of today’s show and there was something romantic about a large travel bag and laptop case shaped like clouds. The suits were familiar WVB shapes, the pastel fluoro colours (continuing trend across the board for SS12) worked and the kid leather patchwork gloves were fun. To be noted was the way the plaid on suits was cut and sewn in a geometric circular way to give the impression of stars yet without sacrificing the silhouette that WVB favours. At the end came sculptures of netting, cut and sewn to resemble flowers stitched together, one resembled a giant green pea and another a giant sky-blue cloud. Dreamy head indeed.
