It’s off to Wales for the start of the giant green literary festival set in the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park in Hay-on-Wye. This year i-D are on schedule with an i-D Covers 1980-2010 event. Wink and you’ll miss it.
Not your average festival by any means – you can swap the crowd surfing for a poetry reading and the dubstep tent for a political debate on the Middle East. Attracting some of the most prolific writers, filmmakers, poets, comedians, politicians and musicians in the world, Hay is the Radio 4 to Glastonbury’s XFM. It’s lawns and deck chairs all the way to the River Wye.
i-D have been attending Hay for years and this year we’re honoured to take part in the festivities. Former i-D editors Dylan Jones and Caryn Franklin and i-D Founder and Editor-in-Chief Terry Jones will discuss ‘i-D Covers 1980-2010′. To celebrate our 30th birthday last year, we brought out the i-D Covers Book published by Taschen, edited by Terry Jones and Edward Enninful with a foreword by Guest Editor Richard Buckley, who will be joining us at Hay. Terry, Richard, Dylan and Caryn will explore three decades of the magazine, culture and style at Sky Arts Studio in Hay on 2nd June at 8pm, tickets are available here. In the meantime, please enjoy this clip dug out from 1986, in which Dylan and Caryn, looking incredibly ‘of the moment’, talk through the history of the i-D wink. For this, they will surely reprimand us.
In addition to the talk, i-D will host a pop-up gallery round the corner from Hay in Clyro, where you can browse the covers book and the archive. The gallery will be open at Ashbrook House, Clyro from 11am to 4pm from the 31st May until 4th June so please come and say… Hay.
