Dave Kendrick is the Hacienda resident turned Macho City disco DJ who brings raucous riot Hi-NRG anthems to The Joiners every Thursday. Enter at rear.
Starting out at East London based watering hole The George and Dragon, Macho City is the weekly pub based rave that is delightfully dirty and deliciously debaucherous. Named after the Steve Miller band track which has inspired the heady, leathered up happenings Macho City has become well known for, this is a not a night for the faint hearted. In exchange for a meager three pounds those Joining the loud crowds can expect to dance until daybreak, drink until things blur and fall down laughing.
An explosion of glitter, attitude, egos, art, oh yeah and GREAT tunes, disco diva Dave is the man behind the decks turning tricks with his expertly edited sets. i-D Online caught up with the Lincolnshire lad to find out how he keeps the crowds gagging for more. Download the magnificent Macho City’s i-DJ mixtapes right here, right now.
How would you describe your sound? Subversive disco with a house/pop/RnB/electronic edge.
What makes a great disco? I’ve nailed it down to trannies. Or somebody naked.
How did you get into DJ’ing? Back in 1984 there was a monthly ‘gay disco’ in a room above a Hells Angels pub in Lincolnshire. They let me play my Hi-NRG, Madonna and Shalamar records for a tenner a night on decks that were literally built in the 1840s. All much to the annoyance of the closetted farmer types stood moodily at the bar.
What are some of the most memorable events, parties and venues you have DJ’d at in the past? I played a ten week DJ tour of Russia back in ’98 that was an eye opener, glasnost and all that. The Russian army were drafted in to each venue to build the stage and sound system. Probably the most fun gig was an NYE party at Granada Studios Tour in Manchester where we snuck out past a security guard and I snogged my boyf outside Rita’s Kabin on the Corrie set at midnight. Being resident at the Hacienda’s infamous Flesh parties probably tops the list though. The 90′s were so incredibly decadent
What are some of your favourite anthems of all time? The definitive Macho City anthem is Viola Wills ‘If You Could Read My Mind’, Lindstrom ‘I Feel Space’, Lee Douglas ‘New York Story’,
Evelyn Thomas High Energy and Lil’ Kim ‘Lighters Up’
Who are your top 5 macho men of all time?
George Bush Senior obviously. The HOT daddy
.
David Wilkie the swimmer with or without tache.
Phil Mitchell (during his downfall in 2010).
50 Cent for the steroids
.
Quentin Crisp because fearlessness is always macho.
