Diplo: Catch ‘Em By surprise

American-born electronic DJ and producer Diplo is currently sat in the top 20 of the UK midweeks for his collaborative track, C’mon (Catch ‘Em By Surprise), made with dutch superstar Tiësto.

The music is exactly what you’d expect from two heavyweights of electro music. Lending their ideas and talents to one soundscape, two of the genre’s leading figures were never going to disappoint. How did the link up come about? Diplo tells i-D Online, “Tiësto just hit me up and I was like, cool, then we did it.” With its resonating bass and catchy hooks, the tune will be blaring from club speakers and pumping out of car stereos across Europe and America this coming summer.

Diplo has always produced music, and although he was known first for his DJ’ing skills, he loves them both the same, “I’m always trying to one up myself in both.” It hasn’t always been plain-sailing however, Diplo has had to invest time and effort to really establish himself as a producer, “I didn’t get any shine for it until I was DJ’ing professionally for a few years.” i-D Online put a few questions to Diplo whilst he was tripping in Trinidad getting ready to drop a set for the locals.

Who are your favourite producers? J dilla, Charles Stepney, David Axelrod, Thomas Bengalter, Stereotypes, Magnetic Man, there really is too many to mention.

Which UK acts would you like to collaborate with? Jamie xx, Yasmin (who I’ve already produced), Breakage, Flux Pavillion and James Blake.

You have quite a slick image, how would you describe your style? Super nice.

What are your favourite fashion brands? Band of Outsiders, RL, Steve Allen, Alexander Wang, Comme des Garçons, Kmart and flip-flops.

Who would you like to see on the cover of i-D? Me.

C’mon, Catch ‘Em By Surprise is available now on iTunes and grab a peak here at our video with Diplo as he took to the stage with Major Lazer at last year’s Notting Hill Carnival.
