Kathleen Katy ‘B’

Katy Brien is the South London girl with killer curls creating breaking beats infused with dirty bass, designed to redefine modern day dub.

Storming the scene with her fittingly titled debut single ‘Katy On A Mission’ in August last year, Katy B became an instant hit on dance floors. First discovered by DJ NG and MC Versatile, Miss B’s first track was produced by heavyweights Benga and remixed by Roska (FYI – the track killed it on every club scene in the world).

Following on from her recent sensational success supporting John Legend & The Roots on tour, Katy recruited the explosive talents of little Miss Dynamite for her second single ‘Lights On’, to mix in some old school rhythm and blues. As the April 4th arrival of her much-hyped debut album, released on Rinse, grows ever closer, i-D Online caught up with the prodigal Peckham-ite to find out how she be.

B is for… Beats

How did Katy B come to be? My dad chatted up his sister’s best mate (my mum) and the rest is history.

What does the B stand for? Bass!!! I wish it was a lot more interesting, but my last name’s Brien.

To be or not to be? That is the question.

If you could be anyone for a day who would you be? I’d like to know how it feels to be a boy for a day.

Who’s queen bee? Lil Kim.

What gets a bee in your bonnet? Rude people.

‘Honey to the bee, that’s you for me’, what’s the honey to your bee? Manuka honey, I drink it every day I’m obsessed!

What was the best lesson you learned at the ‘B’rit school? Have fun and do what you love in life and it won’t feel like working.
