International electronic synth sensations Theo and Adam are the Manchunian duo creating dramatically ambitious pop music, bringing back the art of formal 80′s funk.
Garnering a vast and passionately charged fan base, Hurts have become one of the biggest home-grown talents to emerge from the left-wing pop scene over the past year. Lending their sound brilliantly to the more commercial territories of mainstream music, the band create simple, instant hits about their own experiences and challenges. Writing music for five years, signing on the dole and patiently biding their time, struggling to survive, Theo and Adam have stayed true to their dreams of success, which is what allows their sound to feel so full of substance.
Releasing debut track ‘Wonderful Life’ in Denmark in May 2010, the duo were catapulted into the limelight when the track peaked at number two in Germany, and reached top ten positions in Denmark, Switzerland and Austria. Discussing the background to the phenomenal track’s success, Theo commented “we wrote Wonderful Life as a means of escape, we wanted it to take us out of this life and then all of a sudden it became our golden ticket.”
Always clad in formal wear, the boys explain that their Bros inspired demeanor stemmed from the need to be taken seriously when they used to have drop by the job centre. Going from humble beginnings to selling out stadiums, Hurts have tapped into a scene that was gagging for their reinvention. Whether their music is a guilty pleasure, your proudest find or just happened to make it onto your most recently added, Hurts are undeniably, toe-tappingly, great.
i-D Online caught up with the boys two hours before they jetted off to the next gig in Barcelona, to find out about the wrapped hot dog a fan recently gifted Adam, the suite dedicated to them in Germany and the international tour they have just embarked on.
