Long live Queen Rihanna!
On Sunday, Rihanna made music history; becoming the only girl in the world to follow in the footsteps of King Elvis, scoring an incredible five number one singles in five consecutive years.
First discovered in Barbados by head of Def Jam records, Jay-Z, Robyn Rihanna Fenty has firmly established herself within R&B royalty as the youngest and most successful female hip-hop artist of all time. Rising from her Bajan roots, in her short but dramatic time at the top, the 22-year-old singer/songwriter has gone on to use her fame for the good of the less fortunate, speaking openly about her tumultuous upbringing as her father struggled with hard drugs. Today, Rihanna proudly represents a great number of charities which support under-privileged and terminally ill children.
With five award winning albums to her name and collaborations with music heavyweights Eminem, Kanye and Ne-Yo, such talent and dedication deserves serious recognition with her killer collaboration with Drake, ‘What’s My Name’, ruling the UK singles charts in the here and now. Her latest album Loud not only has the accolade of being ‘most played’ on the i-D office turntable but has also gone multi-platinum and tops the album charts too. Previously winking wonderfully on the cover of The Lovers of Life Issue, i-D Online spoke with our old pal and good girl gone bad ahead of her debut fragrance launch ‘Reb’l Fleur’ to find out more about the essence of the icon and icon.
How would you describe yourself? Bold, sexy, independent… Not obsessed with trends or fads.
How does your new frangrance express the essence of who you are? I think it captures my Bajan roots but also the sleekness of my life in New York City and around the world. Reb’l Fleur is for a woman who dares to be different, who is willing to live her life for herself and not for other people.
What was the inspiration behind the perfume’s name? The name ‘Reb’l Fleur’ is inspired by a nickname my grandmother gave me, it is my latest tattoo and of course, it is a true reflection of my passion for individuality.
Listen here to Rihanna’s hot new track ‘Who’s that Chick’.
